I just finished a conversation with my brother who moved to San Carlos about six months ago. He captured wonderfully the reason why so many expatriates love the San Carlos experience. San Carlos is a smaller town and almost every amenity is within a 3-minute drive…perhaps 5 minutes if you live out near Marina Real. I live at the Royal Golf Club that is situated close to the heart of San Carlos. In a minute I am at Izzy’s grocery store, the pharmacy, the gas station, and many restaurants. A meeting in town with clients includes a 2-minute commute with no traffic lights to slow down my brief drive. Last night my brother went out to dinner at Arbolittos, a fabulous seafood restaurant…drive time 2 minutes. Afterwards he went to Tequila’s, a favorite dancing club with salsa, cumbia, and banda music. His drive time was 2 minutes and another 2 minutes to drive back home afterwards. This lack of travel distance certainly helps to keep down the cost of living as well. Another benefit of living in a smaller community is that you make friends easily and before you know it you have a new family in your new Mexican home.
