I had lunch recently with a gentleman from San Francisco who has chosen to make San Carlos his new home. He is a fascinating person and has lived an interesting and adventuresome life. Beginning with his 20 years as a Navy fighter pilot, to Los Angeles restaurateur, to columnist, his travels are broad and rich.
Our conversation touched on the subject of the personality traits of an expat. What are the characteristics of a person who leaves their home country and moves to a new land with a different culture? We started with a few items and more came to me later. Traits such as gregarious, adventuresome, risk takers, explorers, courageous, spirited, seekers, and lovers of life came to mind.
If you are an expat I’d be curious to know if you have anything to add to the list. What was it inside of you that urged you to make a move to a foreign country?
Love and craziness, as well as teaching my son another part of his culture!
A beautiful culture at that !
